An hugely accomplished painter, Thom Hobson’s paintings seem to effortlessly emerge from a century of modern and contemporary artistic genres. Neo-expressionism, figuration, primitivism, surrealism, symbolism, echoes of Basquiat and Picasso. You feel as though you have seen them before, in somewhere like the Tate modern, but they are completely unique and original. They look like so many of the modern masters’ yet like none of them at all. There is only one true style here and it is all Thom’s. His works are bold, interesting, dark and humorous. They are almost arrogantly playful as he manipulates subject, perspective, form, line and colour with a formidable skill that seems to come so naturally. Thom Hobson’s has to be the one to watch.
